Jerome Marty
I am an experienced director with a background in aquatic sciences. As a project director at the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA), I lead assessments on key topics to Canada. This includes the assessments on quantum technologies, carbon sinks, disaster resilience, the circular economy, Indigenous Policing and on Integrated Natural Resources Management . Prior to joining the CCA in 2016, I was a research scientist at the St. Lawrence River Institute, a regional director of environment at WSP Canada, and a science advisor at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). I am a past President of the International Association of Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) and of the Society of Canadian Limnologists (SCL). I volunteer on the Board of Watershed Canada and of the new Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences (SCAS). I am a member of several scientific advisory committees at the St. Lawrence River Institute, the Ottawa River Keeper, and the Lake Kivu Monitoring Program (Rwanda). In 2019, I became the Chair of the Partnership Group for Science and Engineering (PAGSE) which was incorporated as an NGO in 2020. In 2019, I was also appointed as Canadian member on the Science Advisory Board of the International Joint Commission (IJC). I am a River Champion for both the St. Lawrence and the Ottawa River and I share my passion for the environment and water, teaching at the University of Ottawa at graduate and undergraduate levels since 2011. I authored about 25 peer reviewed publications on the ecology of lakes, rivers and reservoirs and on the impacts of human activities on these ecosystems in Canada. As a freshwater expert, I continue to advise governments on water related issues. When not working, I can be found biking, paddling, or playing accordion.
