Françoise M. Winnik a obtenu un diplôme d’ingėnieur chimiste de l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Mulhouse, France, et un doctorat de l'Université de Toronto, Toronto, ON. Elle a travaillé comme chercheur au Centre de recherche canadien de Xerox, avant de rejoindre l'Université McMaster (Hamilton ON) en 1993 en tant que professeur associée. Depuis 2000, elle est professeur à l'Université de Montréal. Elle est chercheur principale au Centre MANA (Materials Nanoarchitectonics) de l’Institut national pour la science des matériaux (NIMS) de Tsukuba, Japon, et professeur avec Distinction de l'Université de Helsinki, Finlande. Elle est rédactrice en chef de la revue hebdomadaire Langmuir publiėe  par American Chemical Society Publications. Ses intérêts de recherche portent sur l'auto-assemblage des polymères amphiphiles, les nanoparticules, et les biointerfaces.
